Young, talented Costa Rica surfers like Anthony Fillingim of Santa Teresa are leading Costa Rica surfing to the top of the world surf scene. Costa Rica will host this year’s ISA 2016 World Surfing Games from August 6 to 14.
With excellent surf on two ocean coastlines, Costa Rica is emerging as a powerhouse on the world surfing scene.
The Costa Rica National Surf Team made national history last year when they were crowned the 2015 World Surfing Champions, winning the International Surfing Association (ISA) 2015 World Surfing Games held in Nicaragua.
And in a short couple of months, Costa Rica will host the ISA 2016 World Surfing Games from August 6 to 14 in Jaco Beach on the Central Pacific Coast. National teams from 33 countries on five continents will compete against defending champion Team Costa Rica for the title. Costa Rica already successfully hosted the World Surfing Games once, in 2009 at nearby Hermosa Beach.
Young, talented surfers from Costa Rica are already making a name for themselves in international surfing competitions around the world, placing high in international rankings. Surfers like Carlos Muñoz, six-time world medalist Leilani McGonagle, her brother Noe Mar McGonagle who is ranked 16th in the world by the ISA, and 2015 Latin American surfing champion Anthony Fillingim.
Fillingim, who is from the sun-drenched beach paradise of Santa Teresa in Costa Rica, currently leads the Costa Rica National Surfing Circuit 2016 in the men’s division. In an unprecedented season, Fillingim scored the first perfect 20 in a finals heat ever in Costa Rica at the National Surfing Circuit competition COPA Otis Eyewear held June 18 to 19 in Santa Teresa. Before a hometown crowd, the Santa Teresa, Costa Rica surfer broke new national records with his perfect score. Just before International Surfing Day on June 20, Santa Teresa offered spectacular waves and summer weather in rainy season, along with a big turnout of enthusiastic fans.
The 2016 season Grand Final Championships REEF of Costa Rica’s Kölbi National Surfing Circuit will be on July 15, 16 and 17 in Playa Hermosa by Jaco.
